My name is Jackson Lewis, I am a 19 year old Hillcrest High School graduate and a lifelong resident of Midvale. I am running for Canyons School Board District 1 to be a voice for students, teachers, and staff.
About Me
I am a 19-year-old lifelong resident of Midvale and a recent Hillcrest High School graduate. I chose to run when I was 17 years old when I heard a couple of school faculty complain about not getting the resources and support they needed from the state and district.
My Priorities:
Address Chronic Student Absenteeism
Far too many students are not attending school every day, even myself when I was a high school student at Hillcrest High School, I often times struggled with going to school every day, I have lived the life of these students who are facing chronic absenteeism. The district must make changes to improve student quality of life, provide more levels of difficulty to our courses and more applied learning classes, and encourage a unique and fun environment for all students.
Treat our teachers and staff with respect
Teachers set the most important building blocks in a person's development, and their pay should reflect that. As a School Board member, I will be an advocate for pay increases for our teachers and staff. And create a budget for every classroom in the district so that teachers don't have to spend their hard-earned money on classroom supplies.
Protect student pedestrians
I believe that no family should have to own a car to be able to send their children to school. As a School Board member, I will prioritize student pedestrians in decision making about school upgrades and be an advocate for all Midvale pedestrians in conversations about Midvale's future.
I believe that long car pick-up and drop-off lines are avoidable, and that with policy changes around public transit, and walking infrastructure, the district can eliminate the school car line.
